October's Partner of the Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! Helping individuals become connected to their community through employment opportunities is a major goal for the Muskingum County Board of Developmental Disabilities – Starlight Programs. Workers with disabilities have demonstrated the capacity to perform competitive work when given the opportunity. Virtually everyone who employs them will tell you that they perform their assigned tasks very well. They typically rank among their employers’ most dedicated staff members, often working many years at the same organization. But, despite this, their unemployment rate is several times that of the overall workforce. That is why it so important to have this annual, month-long observance, which reinforces the value and talent that people with disabilities add to our workplaces and communities.

On October 19th we celebrated with the individuals who are working and our employer partners at the annual M.S.I. Employment Banquet which takes place on the OUZ/Zane State campus each October. Muskingum County is a leader in their efforts of helping people find employment. We’ve had many successes and the numbers prove it! However, it would not be possible to have the amount of people working who have disabilities without our partnership with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities or also known as OOD. This is why we are naming them our Partner of the Month. Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) is the State of Ohio agency that partners with Ohioans with disabilities to achieve quality employment and independence. They are so great to work with and determined to help people with disabilities find meaningful employment. Congratulations! #OODWorks
