Autism Awareness & Early Intervention

April marks National Autism Awareness Month. Today, this once under-recognized developmental disability affects 1 in 59 children. Boys are affected about four times as often as girls. Autism can have mild to severe symptoms. According to the National Autism Association, the disorder is a "bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3 years impacting the normal development of the brain in areas of social interaction, communication and cognitive function." Early intervention is the key to successful treatment. Research has made clear that high-quality early intervention can improve learning, communication and social skills, as well as underlying brain development.
